Autoliv, the world’s largest supplier of automotive safety equipment, revealed a new innovative foldable steering wheel during CES 2026.
In a normal driving mode, the steering wheel functions like any other. However, when used in a Level 4 autonomous vehicle, the wheel can fold into the dashboard.
According to the company, the retracted steering wheel makes entering and exiting the car easier and also enhances cabin comfort by freeing up more space for passengers.
Considering that Autoliv is a leader in the airbag and seatbelt market, safety was a top priority for the company during development.
In normal driving situations, the wheel has a standard airbag. When folded, the standard airbag is replaced by a secondary airbag installed behind the instrument panel.
The innovative steering wheel will be integrated into the highly anticipated autonomous vehicle from Tensor, expected to launch in the second half of this year. It will be available in the United States, Europe, and the Middle East.
“Automotive safety can no longer follow a one-size-fits-all philosophy. We asked ourselves how to make safety smart and adaptable—creating a system that aligns perfectly with the driver’s needs,” said Fabien Dumont, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer at Autoliv.
“Our collaboration with Tensor delivers precisely that: a driving solution that enhances safety and comfort while adapting to the vehicle’s mode.”
“Fully autonomous driving technology provides an innovative user experience, but manual driving in certain scenarios is still desired by many. Our dual-mode approach with a foldable steering wheel combines the best of both worlds and gives customers the freedom to choose,” added Jay Xiao, Chief Executive Officer of Tensor.
